The Vatican is set for a deeply symbolic and globally significant celebration on Sunday, May 18, as Pope Leo XIV will formally inaugurate his Petrine Ministry during a solemn Eucharistic liturgy at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Vatican news reports that the liturgy, scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM CET in St. Peter’s Square, will include the conferral of the Pallium and the Ring of the Fisherman—ancient symbols that connect the Pope to the ministry of Peter and the tradition of the Good Shepherd. These elements, rich in theological meaning, will mark the formal beginning of Leo XIV’s service as Bishop of Rome and spiritual leader of the universal Church.

The celebration is expected to draw global attention, with millions of Catholics, world leaders, and religious communities joining via live broadcasts and digital platforms. St. Peter’s Square is already witnessing a steady influx of pilgrims, while final preparations are underway to accommodate the thousands expected to attend in person.

A significant moment of the morning will occur just before the Mass, when the Pope will descend to the Tomb of Saint Peter to pray in silence. This quiet act will underscore the unbroken apostolic continuity and the deep spiritual roots that ground the papacy in the witness and martyrdom of the first Pope.
