Following the first ballot at the conclave on Wednesday evening, the election ended after black smoke billowed from the chimney over the Sistine Chapel at 21:00, announcing an inconclusive process for the emergence of the 267th Pope.

Two hours after the announcement was expected by some 45, 000 people who had gathered in St. Peter’s Square an announcement initially expected 7 p.m. but delayed until 9 p.m. the faithful expressed optimism that, with prayers, a Pope who would guide the Church and be there for the people would emerge.

According to Vatican News, Deacon  Nicholas Nkoronko from Tanzania attending the most celebrated global event, said: “ Our role here is to pray for the Holy Spirit to guide the whole process,” adding it does not matter where the potential Pope comes from.

Deacon Nkoronko further emphasized, “whether it’s Africa, Asia, America, what we need is we need a holy Pope. We need a Pope who will guide the Church and will be the pastor of the Church.”

During the twelfth General Congregation of Cardinals on 6th May, Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, during his briefing to journalists, said some qualities highlighted by the 173 Cardinals including of 130 Cardinal electors who participated in the event in the new Pope included one who would be a shepherd, Bridgebuilder, and promoter of reform.

The process will continue on the 8th May.
