The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) kicked off its much-anticipated Local Government Elections on Wednesday, 9 October, but early proceedings were disrupted by the late arrival of electoral officials and materials at several polling units in Jos North Local Government Area.
Anxious residents, eager to cast their votes, were seen loitering around polling stations in Tudun Wada Kabong Ward, Utan Ward, and Rock Haven as they awaited the arrival of PLASIEC officials. According to electoral guidelines, accreditation was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.; however, by 10:30 a.m. and in some cases even past 11 a.m., there were no PLASIEC officials or voting materials in sight.

When TWE News visited a polling unit by Zaria Road near the Post Office, it was revealed that an observer had briefly arrived at around 10 a.m., assuring residents that electoral materials would arrive shortly. However, the observer left shortly after, leaving restless voters who had arrived early in anticipation of casting their ballots.
Here are some polling units visited by TWE News, awaiting arrival of PLASIEC officials to cast their votes:
UTAN PHC III 159
UTAN PU 35
UTAN Central PU 005
UTAN PHC PU 048
UTAN South PU 126
Tudun Wada Kabong, Mallam Fari Junction II PU
Tudun Wada Kabong, Beside St. Murumba College PU
Tudun Wada Kabong, Post Office, Zaria Road PU

The Local Government Elections, endorsed by the President Ahmed Tinubu-led government after years of delays under state administrations, are seen as a critical step toward reinforcing local governance.
PLASIEC is also set to debut its new Voter Verification System (VVS) technology during the election, a move aimed at ensuring a more credible, free, and fair electoral process. However, delays in the arrival of officials have raised concerns about the early conduct of the polls.
