The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, has called on Nigeria’s political leaders to urgently address the nation’s growing economic and social challenges.
Speaking on the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary on October 1, Archbishop Martins urged leaders should view the nation’s struggles through the eyes of the suffering masses. He emphasized the need for policies that would foster an environment where businesses can strive and human dignity is respected.
In a statement signed by the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, the Archbishop lamented the failures of previous administrations in steering Nigeria towards sustainable development. He attributed the widespread insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship to leadership deficiencies.
’’ At 64, many parts of the country are still under constant attacks by bandits and kidnappers while corrupt activities have continued unabated. These are very much unacceptable as they negate the very noble principles upon which our country was founded. We are therefore calling on our political leaders to rise up to the challenges of building a strong and virile nation free from corruption, nepotism, ethnicity, and favoritism – truly progressive country that we all can be proud of.’’ Archbishop Martin stated.
The metropolitan of Lagos Province, also expressed hope for a better future, encouraging Nigerian’s to remain prayerful, law-abiding and dedicated to improving the country’s socio-economic landscape.” Let us work together to build a strong and prosperous nation, free from the ills of corruption, favoritism, and ethnic strife,” he urged.
Archbishop Martins concluded by wishing all Nigerians peace and unity in their continued efforts towards a truly progressive and thriving country.
