Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic made history on Sunday by becoming the first player in 12 years to achieve a “Golden Slam,” winning all four major tournaments and an Olympic gold medal. After defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the Paris Olympics final, Djokovic, a Serbian Orthodox Christian, celebrated by crossing himself multiple times.
Notably, Djokovic performed the sign of the cross from right to left, following the tradition of the Serbian Orthodox Church. This gesture holds deep meaning for Christians, symbolizing the Trinity and Jesus’ dual nature.
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the very earliest Christian practice appears to be the tracing of the sign of the cross of one’s forehead, which later evolved into the practice of making a sign of the cross across a larger portion of the body. St. Basil (329–379) wrote that the apostles “taught us to mark with the sign of the cross those who put their hope in the Lord.”
When Catholics do the sign of the cross today, they cross themselves with their hand starting at the top, going down, and then from left to right. When Orthodox Christians do the sign of the cross, they start at the top, go down, and then from right to left.
Djokovic’s faith has been a constant presence in his life and career. Raised in the Serbian Orthodox Church, he has received the church’s highest honor and has donated millions to charitable causes. Despite being described as more culturally than devoutly religious, Djokovic’s actions demonstrate a strong sense of compassion and love for others, including his foundation’s work in education and his restaurant providing free food to the homeless.
“This is the most important title of my life, because before being an athlete, I am an Orthodox Christian,” he said upon receiving the award.
By giving glory to God for his victory, Djokovic continues to inspire fans with his remarkable achievements and commitment to his faith.
