Pope Francis has expressed his condolences and offered prayers to Iran after President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, May 19.
Eight people were killed in the crash, including Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir- Abdollahian.
In a letter to Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, the Pope extended his sympathy to the nation and the families of the victims.
Pope Francis had previously spoken with Raisi about the Israel -Hamas war and had been asked to use his influence to bring an end to the conflict.
Mohammad Mokhber, the former vice president, is now serving as the acting president of Iran following Raisi’s death.
